Inflatables installation in 3 weeks
The final installation was composed of a series of balloons and “weights” that were constructed out of sheets of aluminum coated nylon fiber. During our experimentation phase we discovered that there was a certain ratio of material to volume that the balloons could hold up. Using that ratio, we developed a system where we had modules made up of balloons and material weights. Some of the modules, the smaller ones, had a tendency to sink while others had a tendency to float. By aggregating the modules we were able to construct a canopy that had parts that wanted to reach the ceiling and others that wanted to touch the floor and in the end the whole thing stayed suspended at some point in between! One of the amazing things about the installation was that it was affected by the slightest changes in the environment. The wind created as people walked by made the whole thing move and air currents and microclimates affected it as well. In fact, during our presentation, the body heat created by all thirty of us had the effect of raising the installation over a foot!
